What's TOC(Total Organic Carbon) analyzer
TOC analyzer (Total Organic Carbon Analyzer) is a scientific instrument used to measure the total organic carbon (TOC) content in water, soil, or other samples. TOC represents the total amount of carbon in organic compounds, which is a critical parameter for assessing environmental quality, water purity, and industrial process efficiency.
Key Components & Working Principle
Sample Preparation:
- Samples are often filtered to remove particulates (for dissolved organic carbon, DOC) or analyzed directly for total organic carbon (TOC).
Oxidation Methods:
- Combustion Oxidation:
- Samples are heated to high temperatures (600–1000°C) in the presence of oxygen, converting organic carbon into CO₂.
- Commonly used for high TOC concentrations (e.g., wastewater).
- Wet Oxidation:

- TC: Total carbon (organic + inorganic).
- IC: Carbonates, bicarbonates, and dissolved CO₂.
Direct TOC Analyzers:
- Remove inorganic carbon (e.g., by acidification and purging) before oxidizing organic matter.
- Provides a direct TOC measurement.
Online/Continuous TOC Analyzers:
- Used in real-time monitoring systems (e.g., water treatment plants, industrial processes).

- Assess pollution in rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
- Track TOC levels in wastewater treatment.
- Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology:
- Ensure purity of water for drug production (e.g., USP <643> compliance).

- Monitor organic contaminants in drinking water and beverages.

Advantages

- High sensitivity (down to parts per billion, ppb).
- Non-destructive for some methods.
Limitations
- Requires calibration with standard solutions.
- Interferences from high salinity or suspended solids may occur.
Comparison with Other Parameters
- TOC vs. COD/BOD:
- TOC directly measures carbon content, while COD/BOD estimate oxygen demand (indirect measures of organic pollution).
- TOC is faster and more precise for low-concentration samples.
For example, in semiconductor manufacturing, TOC analyzers ensure ultrapure water by detecting trace organic contaminants, which could damage electronic components.
